Usage of Stainless steel in the Petroleum Industry.

Steel is a huge own circle of relatives of metals; they all are alloys wherein iron is blended with carbon and different elements. And Stainless Steel is the second one maximum broadly used in building/construction industries as it has exquisite corrosion resistance properties. Stainless metal (SS) is alloy metal with a minimum chromium content material of 10.5 % or greater and most carbon content material of much less than 1.20%. Every industry from A to Z is using stainless steel, the revolutionary Stainless Steel promotes technological progress and makes previously impossible achievements daily, everyday occurrence.

A popular product category that usually doesn’t get as much attention as other products when it comes to stainless steel is the chemical, processing, and oil & gas industries.

  • The oil and gas industry widely operates in demanding environments that see the machinery working in very high or low temperatures in potentially toxic substances. For these reasons, special types of metals that can withstand corrosion and extreme temperatures have been developed.
  • As the oil and gas market grows increasingly focusing its search on even more dangerous environments, the demand for corrosive resistant duplex steel products becomes higher. The greater the depth of offshore oil exploration, the greater the pressure is the installation of duplex and super duplex stainless steel pipes installed in harsh corrosive environments

Benefits of Stainless Steel in the Oil & Gas industry

  • High strength that therefore enables lighter constructions.
  • Is relatively maintenance-free, reducing life-cycle costs.
  • Has very good corrosion resistance, including pitting corrosion resistance and intergranular corrosion.
  • Has higher tensile strength.
  • Has good weldability

Because of all of these, Super Duplex Stainless Steel can regularly be found in piping systems, separators, scrubbers, pumps, manifolds, heat exchangers, flow lines, and storage tanks. For example, stainless steel is also an integral part of many offshore oil platforms and the marine environment. The corrosive nature of crude oil means that stainless steel is an ideal container material, just like in a submarine, Underwater conditions, such as offshore drilling, the equipment used must be very robust and corrosion-resistant.

The main pipes used in the offshore Oil and Gas Industry is Duplex 2205 (22% Chromium, 5% Nickel) and 2507 (25% Chromium, 7% Nickel); and Super Duplex 2507 which has higher corrosion resistance. Duplex steel is also very resistant to chloride stress corrosion cracking and can withstand very low pressure.

As a specific example of Super Duplex 2507, Petro-Canada installed a combination of Super Duplex 2507 and Duplex 2205 pipes at their Newfoundland oil field and chose these specific products because they can withstand high levels of salt with no corrosion; they have high tensile strength, excellent resistance to pitting, cracking and impact resistance, minimal thermal expansion, and high electrical conductivity.
