What Is Expanded Metal and What are its Types?

The term “Expanded Metal” refers to a plate or sheet that has been sliced and extended into a mesh. When the metal is stretched, it forms a mesh of diamond-shaped gaps – although several other patterns can be formed. Many metals, including stainless steel, hot rolled steel, cold rolled steel, titanium, and others, may be extended.
The mesh pattern may be phased (providing the most open area) or straight with all rows and columns aligned. The volume of room for the flow of air, water, and light is determined by the proportion of open area, which varies depending on the desired use of the enlarged metal.

What Is the Manufacturing Process for Expanded Metal?

An expanding system is used to create an expanded metal mesh by converting heavy steel sheets and coils into the expanded metal mesh. The expanding unit has a knife that defines the pattern for the mesh. The metal is sliced and stretched separately as it passes via the expanding machine through a forced slitting and stretching mechanism. The small holes made by the knife cause the metal to be extended, resulting in uniform holes. The expanding machine is designed or controlled individually as the material is fed through to maintain a comprehensive pattern. After that, the expanded metal is wrapped into the coils and cut into the sheets.
Different metal thicknesses and mesh styles can be used based on the required purpose L.W.D. Long Way Diamond and S.W.D. Short Way Diamond are standard abbreviations for the ideal size and shape of diamond-shaped mesh holes.

Types of Expanded Metal

There are various types of expanded metals and here are the most common types:

  1. Standard Expanded Metal:
The most flexible and effective price stability of the product is Standard expanded metal. It’s available in a range of gauges and open sizes. It’s frequently used to create a stiff, lifted, and slip-resistant base. The strands and bonds of normal extended metal are all set at the same angle. This adds power and rigidity while still allowing for optimum airflow.
  2. Flattened expanded metal
Flattened expanded metal is made through flattening expanded metal through cold rolling it. Where a smooth surface is desired, it is chosen. The flattening mechanism usually extends the duration of the sheet by 5 percent.
  3. Hexagonal expanded metal
Instead of the regular diamond openings, hexagonal extended metal has hexagonal openings. The metal’s hexagonal form adds strength while allowing air, light, fire, sound, and liquid to move through. When the metal is extensively extended, hexagonal openings are favored as diamond openings.
  4. Architectural expanded metal
The diamond design is enhanced with architectural elements in an architectural extended alloy. As a result, the architecture achieves a balance of good looks, increased protection and privacy, and better ventilation. It may be used for both utilitarian and aesthetic purposes and a mix of the two.
  5. Micro expanded metal
Micro stretched metal is a light gauge metal with small holes. Regular, flattened, hexagonal, and square openings are all possible. Sensors also use this kind of expanded aluminum.

Advantages of Expanded Metals

There are various benefits of using expanded metals

  • Fair Cost: A little number of metals also can be expanded into big pieces
  • Efficient Process: Very less waste is obtained while processing the expanded metal
  • Good conductor: Expanded metal is a good conductor of energy, magnetic flux, and heat since it is a single piece.
  • Protective reinforcement: For additional strength, expanded metal meshes may be mixed with glass, concrete, and other materials.
  • High tensile strength: Expanded metals can handle more weight and sustain more stress than woven metals or jointed welds.
  • Light weight: Expanded metals are thinner than standard metal sheets.
  • Allows for free movement of air and light: Metal that has been expanded allows for free movement of air and light.
  • Acoustic characteristics: Specifically designed mesh may improve acoustics while also providing sound deadening material.
