Corrosion occurs when a refined metal is naturally converted to a more stable form, such as oxide, hydroxide, or sulfide, resulting in material deterioration. Corrosion is one of the most common phenomena we encounter in our daily lives. You’ve probably seen that over time, some iron items become coated in an orange or reddish-brown colored coating. This layer is created by a chemical reaction called rusting, which is a type of corrosion.

Rusting is a kind of oxidation. Rust is formed when iron interacts with water and oxygen to generate hydrated iron (III) oxide. The reaction’s word equation is as follows: hydrated iron (III) ox (iron + water + oxygen).

Rusting and corrosion are two chemical processes that cause things, particularly metals, to dissolve. Furthermore, we must have all encountered similar occurrences at some time in our lives. It’s a regular sight at factories, shipyards, ruined buildings, and abandoned automobiles, to name a few places. However, with such a backdrop, many of us become puzzled by the terms rust and corrosion. While these are two names that communicate the same notion and are commonly used interchangeably, they have some significant differences. It is critical to study and understand them.

Differences between Corrosion and Rusting?

  • Corrosion is the chemical, electrochemical, or other processes that cause materials to deteriorate. Rusting is a chemical process that results in the creation of a red or orange coating on the surface of metals. It is a corrosion component.
  • Corrosion may occur on a variety of surfaces, including skin, wood, metals, and so on. Surfaces of iron and its alloys are prone to rust.
  • Corrosion can occur when a substance is exposed to air or certain chemicals. When a metal is exposed to air and moisture, rust develops.
  • Metal oxides or salts are formed as a result of corrosion. When rusting occurs, only iron oxide is generated.
  • Degradation is a type of corrosion that can occur in materials such as polymers and ceramics.

Examples –

  • Corrosion can be seen in the form of rust on iron, tarnish on silver, and the blue-green patina that forms on copper.
  • Rusting of steel and iron kitchenware. Exhaust systems and automobile bodywork are rusting. Various metallic sculptures are rusting. Copper kitchenware is rusting.
