Corrosion Resistant Sheet and Plates

Corrosion resistant steels includes the highly popular stainless steel. These steel plates do not undergo corrosion when exposed to wet environments. Non-corrosion resistant steels such as carbon steels rust, when exposed to air and moisture. This, rusting results in an iron oxide surface layer that porous and fragile.

Various elements are alloyed with these corrosion resistant steels that protect them from corrosion. Stainless steel plates contain chromium, which forms a layer of chromium oxide that protects them from damage. The passivation of layer helps in resisting corrosion. Steel plates have varying amounts of corrosion resistance. The chromium and molybdenum content in stainless steel plates helps them in resisting reducing acids. Dilute sulphuric and hydrochloric acid attacks are resisted by corrosion resistant plates. These plates are also capable of resisting localized corrosion such as crevice corrosion, pitting corrosion and stress corrosion cracking. Pitting corrosion is when small holes form on the surface of the metal. When a liquid runs in confined spaces alongside the metal it creates crevice corrosion. The formation of a crack in exposure to corrosive environments means stress-corrosion cracking.
