High Speed Steel

High-speed steel (HSS) is a tool steel generally used as a high-hardness cutting tool material, high wear resistance, and high heat resistance. It is also known as steel as air-hardening steel. It is usually found in power-saw blades and drill bits. It is superior to older high-carbon steel tools that can tolerate elevated temperatures without losing their temper (hardness). This property enables quicker cutting of HSS than high carbon steel, thus the name high-speed steel. At room temperature, HSS grades usually exhibit high hardness (above Rockwell hardness 60) and resistance to abrasion (usually linked to tungsten and vanadium content often used in HSS) compared to common carbon and tool steels in their usually recommended heat treatment.
