Nitronic is the name given to stainless steels strengthened using nitrogen. These are austenitic stainless steels developed for multi-purpose applications. Nitronic is developed for high temperature applications. The steel also has oxidation resistance.
Nitronic steel is well-known for its wear and galling resistance. Silicon and manganese is added to give galling and fretting resistance even annealed condition. Cold-working gives higher strength to the steel. Nitronic stainless steels have better yield strength when compared to other steel grades such as 304L and 316L. Nitronic steels are used to reduce the weight of transportation vehicles. The high strength to weight ratio causes buses and railcars to have reduced weight. Aerospace industry uses Nitronic as hydraulic tubing. Good mechanical properties at ultralow temperatures of Nitronic offers better compatibility for such applications. Marine applications like boat shafting and rod rigging uses Nitronic 50. Nitronic 60 is specifically developed for giving high resistance to galling and metal wear. The addition of silicon and manganese gives it resistance to gailling, wearing and fretting even in annealed conditions.
