M42

M42 High-Speed Steel Bars is a cobalt molybdenum tools steel, the addition of 8 percent cobalt means that M42 delivers superior red-hardness when compared to M2. The composition of the M42 bars ensures a good balance of toughness and durability and is widely used for all types of cutting tools, often used for machining materials and superalloys that are difficult to machine. M42 HSS Bars have a heat-treated hardness of between 68 and 70 HRC. As such, the cutting edges on tools made using M42 super high-speed steel bars remain sharp and tough in heavy-duty and high-production cutting applications.

For pressurized gas quenching of M42 high-speed steel bars, a rapid quenching rate of fewer than 1000 degrees F (538 degrees C) is essential to achieve the required properties. M42 high-speed steel bars have high hardness and outstanding hot hardness properties which render steel an excellent option for machining high-strength and pre-hardened steels, high-hardness alloys and tough-to-machine, non-ferrous superalloys used in the aerospace, oil and power generation industries.

M42 high-speed steel bar used for conditions requiring outstanding hot hardness. M42 is the ideal choice for cutting equipment such as twisting drills, broaches, taps, milling cutters, saws, saw blades, and cold working tools. M42 is, therefore, less susceptible to chipping when used for interrupted cuts and costs less when compared to the same carbide made tools.
